Alexander Liebermann is a composer who is passionate about the natural world. After a life-changing trip to the rainforest in Costa Rica, Alexander began to awaken to the presence of the natural world in his life. He started paying attention to the birdsong: the nuances, the particularities, the differences from one call to another, the tone, and the pitches. He started transcribing these calls, or writing them down on staff paper and turning them into sheet music.
Performers of all kinds: flautists, violinists, percussionists, vocalists, and more play these transcriptions alongside the original performers, the birds themselves.
Alexander collaborated with Professor Loren C. Buck from Northern Arizona University to musically depict the life cycle of Arctic Ground Squirrels. Alexander set this to music with a string quartet.
